Colorado Landscape Architects Get Licensure

Colorado finally has a landscape architecture licensure law! Gov. Bill Ritter made it official on May 30, 2007.

The disappointment that followed the veto of the Colorado Landscape Architects Professional Licensing Act by Gov. William Owens last year has been reversed. On May 30, the new governor, Bill Ritter, signed SB07-107, which requires licensure for landscape architects, into law.

It requires landscape architects to be licensed in the state by Jan. 1, 2008, and establishes regulatory authority within the Division of Registrations, Department of Regulatory Agencies.
Vermont is now the only state without a landscape architecture licensure law.

The bill, sponsored by Abel Tapia (D) in the Senate and Alice Borodkin (D) in the House, stipulates the creation of a five-member Board of Landscape Architects and specifies its composition and authority. The board can determine minimum education, experience, and examination requirements for licensure. The board also has the authority to create the rules and standards for the practice and licensure of landscape architects; to issue licenses upon evaluation of applicant credentials; respond to complaints; investigate and, where necessary, restrict licenses or refer licensee activities for prosecution; maintain records of licensees and administrative actions; and set and collect fees.
