The upcoming School and Campus Design Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

This project delivered an integrated, balanced design solution that transformed the true heart of this well-known campus. Drawing on the design principles from the original campus architect, Edward Durell Stone, the design team used that historical perspective as the foundation for the design solution that met the goals and needs of the campus while also achieving LEED Silver Certification. The project also was awarded the 2019 Grand Honor Award from the Rochester, NY Chapter of the AIA. The design resulted from a very deliberate process with many stakeholder meetings, lasting from conception in 2011 to completion/occupancy in 2018. The successful result was a more open and aesthetically pleasing appearance, improved Bagatelle Courtyard for more comfortable dining and group activities, removed stairs for improved accessibility, opened up views from/to the inside for a more pleasant dining experience and improved security, enhanced a bus stop to support increased use of mass transit, incorporated rain gardens to manage and treat the stormwater runoff, improved the pedestrian amenities and seating to encourage outdoor lingering and socializing, and improved the overall "curb appeal" of this mainstay of campus tours for prospective students. Originally constructed in the mid-1960's, this Campus Center is now prepared to meet the needs of students and the campus from 2019 and well into the future.
