Calif. Residents Respond To Drought

Santa Cruz gets most of its water from the San Lorenzo River, which this summer is barely a trickle as it leaves the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Santa Cruz County, Calif. saved an average of 1 million gallons of water a day in July, which officials attributed to a public awareness campaign that began in late spring. Urging residents to restrict water usage and reminding them of the drought, conservation officials are very pleased with the results of the ads.

The county instituted mandatory measures in May to reduce water consumption by 5 percent, calling for no landscape watering between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. (excluding drip irrigation.)

The measures so far have been successful with the city of Santa Cruz averaging 12 million gallons a day instead of the normal 13 million. There were a handful of violators though, and the city responded by sending out around 200 warning letters to those who were spotted unlawfully washing their cars or watering lawns without a hose capped with a nozzle.
