Sculptor Deedee Morrison gracefully bent three-quarter inch sheets of industrial grade COR-TEN steel to depict the pages of an open book. The jacket cover is intricately laser cut to emulate the scroll patterns of a medieval manuscript (bottom picture). An LED light box set into the cover panels illuminates the sculpture from within.
Deedee Morrison's 8' x 8' x 10' "Boundless Knowledge" was unveiled at the Sterling Municipal Library in Baytown, Texas on Oct. 17, 2013. The artwork is a tribute to the library's 50-year anniversary. "We've done a lot of things this year for our anniversary, but this sculpture is a special way of commemorating 50 years of service," said Katherine Brown, the Sterling library director. "We are so excited to have this nationally known sculptor complete this work for us," she added. The COR-TEN steel book "pages" presently have a rust layer, which over time will darken to a reddish patina. Morrison said "Boundless Knowledge" represents the many journeys of enlightenment a reader can take with a book. She said the sculpture is based on a literary tradition that has been carried down from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, that books are meant to preserve information and knowledge in a community." The design inspiration for the book covers came from the Lindau Gospels (880 A.D.) at the Morgan Library in New York City. In 1901, Pierpont Morgan bought the Medieval Latin manuscript from the Abbey of St. Gall (circa 719) in Switzerland.
