Learn how to identify problematic birds and how to mitigate issues within your landscape with UC Cooperative Extension, Human-Wildlife Interactions Advisor, Breanna Martinico's OnDemand webinar.

On May 11th, UC Cooperative Extension, Human-Wildlife Interactions Advisor, Breanna Martinico, presented a webinar for the Landscape Expo about bird management and how it leads to landscape complexity when done properly.

Martinico described how important these aviation animals are to promoting sustainability, healthier landscapes, and explained the integrated pest management (IPM) principles. She went on to give examples including studies and practical tips to managing birds within your landscape designs in urban, agricultural settings, and rural settings.

While there are pest birds, she explained that they can change and become less invasive depending on time of year and type of bird.

Webinar Description:
This talk will focus on management for birds, including pest and beneficial species. I will cover pest bird biology, identification, monitoring, common types of damage caused, and lifecycles. I will go over common management strategies to minimize damage from these species. I will also cover vertebrate and invertebrate pest management including pest biology, monitoring, identification, common types of damage caused, and life cycles as it pertains to biological control from predatory birds. I will cover strategies enhance biological control from avian species in a variety of settings.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify common pest birds and their damage.
2. Understand pros and cons about different methods to minimize or mitigate bird damage.
3. Understand how to enhance biological control from birds.

Breanna Martinico
Breanna is a wildlife biologist and ecologist, specializing in ornithology. Breanna is currently working to develop a research and extension program that increases knowledge and adoption of management practices that reduce pest problems, promote ecological sustainability, and increase farm viability in California. She is compelled by the co-existence and mutual benefits of humans and wildlife and is committed to working to find solutions that benefit both people and wildlife.
