Course Description: As stormwater runoff flows over land and impervious surfaces, it can accumulate debris, chemicals, sediment, and other pollutants that can negatively affect water quality if runoff is left untreated. High volumes of runoff can cause changes in hydrology and water quality such as habitat modification and loss, increased flooding, decreased aquatic biological diversity, and increased sedimentation and erosion. The primary method to control stormwater discharges is the use of best management practices. It is more cost effective and environmentally sound to put management practices in place before aquatic systems are affected. Restoring a polluted water body is much more difficult and expensive than utilizing best management practices from the start. This presentation discusses the various management strategies that can be implemented to reduce stormwater pollution. Biography: Justin Moss is an associate professor for the turfgrass science department at Oklahoma State University. He has a B.S. and M.S. in Horticulture and his PhD in Crop Science. Professor Moss provides leadership in turfgrass water and environmental issues with 70 percent research and 30 percent extension duties. Research efforts focus on urban turfgrass environments including urban water quality, use, and conservation, turfgrass plant physiology, and sustainable turfgrass management. Extension efforts focus on dissemination of environmental turfgrass science and management information to the turf industry, extension educators, master gardeners, governmental decision makers, and the public. Moss also secures extramural funding to support and sustain research and extension activities, publishes research results in refereed journals, scientific conference proceedings, and other appropriate venues, as well as recruits, advises and directs M.S. and PhD students to prepare them for entrance into the industry or academic positions.
