The United States celebrated its 218th birthday by removing the bald eagle from the endangered species list.

Eagle populations have been growing steadily over the past 10 years, testifying to the fact that environmental protective programs work.

The July 4, 1994 decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reclassified the bird as "threatened" rather than "endangered."
