ASLA Washington State Chapter

2019 Chapter Report

On Advocacy Day, May 2, in Washington, D.C., chapter president Tim Slazinik, ASLA and trustee Marieke Lacasse, ASLA were able to meet with Senator Maria Cantwell and talked about landscape architecture, water quality, infrastructure and more.
The Chapter nominated two members for Fellows: Mark Brands, ASLA from Site Workshop (in Works) and Brice Maryman, ASLA from MIG/SvR (in Service).

Profile: Established in 1973, the chapter today includes more than 400 members around the state. WASLA keeps members and others informed about issues and activities pertaining to ASLA and the profession, helps fund student scholarships, participates on the Architects & Engineers Legislative Council, and often collaborates with allied professional groups such as the American Institute of Architects, Urban Land Institute, American Planning Association, The Washington Recreation and Parks Association, and the Washington Association of Landscape Professionals.

On January 24 the chapter held a Landscape Trivia Night at Teku Tavern in Seattle. In Spokane, an open social took place at the historic Steam Plant on January 30. Partnering with AIA Seattle, the chapter presented a moderated panel discussion surrounding alternate learning environments on February 6 at The Center for Architecture and Design, also in Seattle. For the first time, an Advocacy Day was planned (March 21) in the state capital of Olympia where chapter representatives met with legislators to discuss the profession. The group also received a Proclamation from Governor Inslee, marking April 2019 as Landscape Architecture Month in the state. Members gathered for the Annual Conference, titled Vantage Point at the Tacoma Convention Center on March 22 with an opening reception the evening before. And the chapter's Annual Professional Awards and reception was held November 7 at Seattle's Georgetown Ballroom. There were also Open Studio Socials, and professional development opportunities throughout the year.
