ASLA New York Chapter 2022 News
In 2022 the New York Chapter continued the tradition of the semi-annual 4 CEUs and a Beer series. In March the event was held virtually with the topic: New York City Waterfront Planning and Planning. In October, we were able to hold the second event of the series in person for the first time in three years. The topic: Funding Opportunities and Strategies for Landscape Architects, made for a very interesting presentation and discussion. It was wonderful to once again host this event at The Center for Architecture and actually follow the event with socializing.
In April we hosted our annual Design Award reception at the Center for Architecture amidst the exhibit of our winning projects which were on display for the month. 150 people joined us to celebrate the projects and congratulate our winners. We had 63 entries juried by the Washington Chapter who awarded: seven Honor awards, fifteen Merit awards, and one Board Choice award.

In May our Education Committee held their second annual student career roundtable to assist graduating students as they navigate the various aspects of the profession. Students had the opportunity to move through four breakout rooms to meet with professionals from various areas of the industry: non-profit, business, private sector, and designer. Once again, the event was a great success and planning for the 2023 event is underway.
In June we hosted our first open studio since 2019! The event was held at W Architecture and Landscape Architecture ???,???in Brooklyn.
In June we collaborated with Build Out Alliance, a group that promotes and advocates for the LGBTQ community within the building, design and construction industries. Together we hosted Building Stories: Out in the Landscape. The event brought together LGBTQ+ individuals from the field of landscape architecture to discuss their stories and what diversity and acceptance in the workplace means to them.
As the warmer weather moved in we were able to hold three site tours which highlighted the incredible work being done by our local firms: 550 Madison with Snohetta and Siteworks; Gansevoort Peninsula Hard Hat Tour led by JCFO and Pier 26 led by NatureCycle and Bio Habitats. All of these events were sold out and followed by a lively happy hour.
Our Plant Research Group continued its walking tours, hosting 5 events this year which included: Teardrop Park, Under the K Bridge, and the Javits Center rooftop. The Plant Research Group provides an opportunity for professionals to collectively expand and share their knowledge of NYC plants.
Our DEI Committee continued its work with the awarding of two inaugural grants: $1500 toward attendance at the National Conference and $1000 toward the cost of the LARE exam. Both grants target BIPOC Emerging Professionals.
Our chapter had three members elevated to Fellow: Richard Alomar, Associate Professor, Department Chair, Graduate Program Director, Rutgers University. Jennifer Nitzky, Design Principal, Studio HIP and Nancy Prince, Chief of Landscape Architecture, NYC Parks. We are very proud to have such accomplished landscape architects in our chapter.
We held our annual President's Dinner on October 26th. We honored New York State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid and The Natural Areas Conservancy. The event was a tremendous success with over 380 members of the NY Landscape Architecture community in attendance.

We had an amazing year thanks to our dedicated Executive Committee and committee volunteers as well as our enthusiastic members who help make all we do a success. The New York Chapter continues to be
