Founded in 1973 under the direction of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), ASLA Colorado advances the profession by advocating the issues that affect members. The association provides professional education and programs and generates overall awareness for landscape architecture to the public through our public relations and government affairs efforts. In December 2017, ASLA Colorado hosted a Fireside Talk with Austin Troy, PhD Professor and Chair of Urban Design at CU Denver and Principal and co-founder of Spatial Informatics Group, LLC. Troy presented a growing body of research that indicates the occurrence of crime is associated with urban environmental design - particularly the distribution and condition of vegetation. The talk was followed with a lively open-forum discussion. A cozy crowd of 14 gathered to join in the conversation over brews and snacks.
In July 2018, ASLA Colorado volunteers got to work with Denver Urban Gardens (DUG) - building cedar garden beds, pathways, and tilling/composting soil in the new plots at Nome Park in Aurora, Colorado.
PARK(ing) Day installations cropped up around Denver during September, peppering the city with eye-catching parklets in some of the city's most dense urban zones. Passersby were treated to new and artful places to kick back and enjoy their surroundings during the workday.
ASLA Colorado's annual Sketch Crawl and Watercolor Workshop led by Craig Stoffel, RLA at Hord Coplan Macht, and David Thorpe, Planner and Illustrator at Norris Design, took participants on a walking tour through Denver's urban core. With Denver's iconic Union Station as a backdrop, participants picked up new illustration techniques during the fun and interactive half-day workshop, held in October 2018.
Also in October, ASLA Colorado's Annual Gathering was a night of celebration of our members, awards recipients, council fellows and sponsors. A beautiful fall evening provided the perfect environment to reflect on excellent design work being generated across the chapter.
