4 Out of 10 U.S. Bridges
According to a news article from Rental magazine, the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) has estimated that over 47,000 bridges in the United States have been classified as structurally deficient. Additionally, ARTBA reports that around 235,000 bridges across the nation are in need of repair or replacement. ARTBA's chief economist, Alison Premo Black, reveals in the article that the pace of repairs on bridges has slowed significantly in the last five years. According to Black, if improvements continue at the current rate, it would take 80 years to repair or replace all of the structurally unsound bridges in the U.S. About two-thirds of the bridges identified as structurally deficient in 2018 were also marked as such in 2014. Some notable bridges listed as unsound include: • Brooklyn Bridge, N.Y • San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, Calif. • Pensacola Bay Bridge, Fla. • Vicksburg Bridge, Miss. • Memorial Bridge, Washington, D.C.
