American Trails, a nonprofit organization that works to advance the development of diverse and high-quality trails, has announced a call for
scholarship applicants.

American Trails, which will host their 22nd International Trails Symposium in Portland Ore. May 17 – 20, has announced a call for scholarship applicants. The scholarship program, Hulet Hornbeck Emerging Leaders Scholarship, is in honor of lifelong trail activist Hulet Hornbeck, who was a key player in organizing the first National Trails Symposium in 1971.

The scholarship is for young adults who have an interest in trails, conservation, and/or outdoor recreation and are interested in learning about these as potential career paths. Twenty winners will be selected and will:
• Receive a full registration to the Symposium
• Spend on entire day in the field, visiting various trails and talking to experts about trail design, construction, and maintenance, as well as opportunities for visitor use and engagement.
• Work together on a trail-based service project
• Network with Symposium participants
• Be paired with a mentor already established in the field
• Deliver a group presentation on their Symposium experience to an audience of 30-50 conference attendees

The deadline for submitting applications is December 19.
