Al Gore will speak at the American Society of Landscape Architects?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? annual meeting this Oct. 8 in San Francisco, the ASLA has announced. The former vice president will present the talk that inspired ?EUR??,,????'?????<?An Inconvenient Truth,?EUR??,,????'?????<? last year?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s much-discussed documentary about climate change. Gore, who appeared at the Academy Awards in February, is on a roll these days. The former vice president will be in San Antonio, Texas, on May 5 for the American Institute of Architects?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Growing Beyond Green?EUR??,,????'?????<? national convention. October?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s event won?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?t be the first time Gore has interacted with the ASLA. In 1992, the society presented then-Senator and soon-to-be vice president with its Olmsted Medal, the highest honor the Society gives to individuals outside the profession of landscape architecture. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It was only the third time the medal had ever been presented and this early honor turned out to be very prescient given Al Gore?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s steadfast leadership, vision and stewardship of the environment,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Nancy C. Somerville, executive vice president and CEO of ASLA. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?His speaking tour and documentary have educated millions on what we must do to protect our planet for ourselves and for generations to come. Landscape architects are on the forefront of designing our built environment and protecting our natural resources and his presentation will provide a rallying point for the profession.?EUR??,,????'?????<? The society did not disclose what it is paying for Gore?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s appearance. This month, however, an Arizona State University spokesperson said the university was paying the former senator?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s standard fee of $100,000 plus expenses. In mid-April, at least 11 lectures by Gore were scheduled over the next 11 weeks, according to announcements by sponsoring organizations. The ASLA Annual Meeting is the largest annual gathering of landscape architecture professionals in the world and will be held October 6-9 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, Calif. More than 7,000 attendees are expected to participate in over 80 educational sessions and to tour the 500-booth EXPO.
