The White House announced the allocation of over $2.2 billion from the RAISE discretionary grant program to fund 162 infrastructure projects throughout the United States. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, together with Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn and other officials, made the announcement during an event in South Carolina. The funding includes a significant grant of nearly $23 million to construct a pedestrian bridge and a multi-modal transit hub in Orangeburg, South Carolina, aiming to enhance connectivity between neighborhoods, college campuses, and downtown areas.

 
The RAISE grant program, which has been expanded under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, is designed to support communities of all sizes. The FY2023 funding is evenly divided, with half going to rural areas and the other half to urban areas.

The funded projects will have a substantial impact on transportation efficiency and safety across the nation. The grants will support a wide range of initiatives, including strengthening supply chains, replacing bridges, improving road infrastructure for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, reducing emissions from the transportation sector, and promoting wealth creation and good-paying union jobs.

Demand for the RAISE funding exceeded the available funds, with the Department of Transportation receiving $15 billion in requests for the $2.26 billion that was allocated this year. The awarded projects include various infrastructure improvements, such as the Palomar Street Grade Separation Project in Chula Vista, California, which will eliminate a rail crossing known for causing delays and accidents, and the Route 6 Reconstruction and Preservation project in Standing Rock, South Dakota, aimed at addressing a road with a higher-than-average rate of roadway injuries and fatalities.
