Research Proves The Role of Green Infrastructure In Stormwater Management

Wetlands and Wooded Vegetation Highlighted For Alabama and Mississippi

Connected wetlands like these in the Alabama and Mississippi Coastal Region have been proven to assist in filtering and retaining stormwater, reducing runoff and local flooding, according to research published in Landscape Journal. Photo Credit: rjdoc, Pixabay

Research by Byahut et al. published in the June 2026 issue of Landscape Journal found reduced runoff in areas with a larger proportion of connected vegetation and wetlands. Conducted in the Alabama and Mississippi Coastal Region, the research evaluates the effectiveness of green infrastructure in increasing local rainwater storage and minimizing local flooding. The most effective regional landscapes were more connected and more complex, with compact development that leaves large open natural areas to encourage stormwater absorption. The goal of the research is to provide insight on desirable development patterns for regional planning.

As seen in LASN magazine, October 2026.
