Concord Park and Community Center

Milwaukie, Oregon
by Learning Landscapes Design LLC

Moving beyond conventional playground models, the team employed a community-driven design process to develop a cohesive playscape that integrates ecological character with inclusive play.

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Concord Park and Community Center is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Learning Landscapes Design was commissioned by the North Clackamas Parks and Recreation District to create an innovative, inclusive, natural play environment for the Oak Grove community. The design is anchored by two sculpted earth mounds with boulder embankments, planted with native trees to reflect the site's historic forested landscape. A unifying theme of regional flora and fauna is expressed through custom elements, including an owl climber, turtle climber, and acorn climber. A large log climber provides graduated physical challenges and elevated viewpoints for older children, while a series of contoured turf mounds creates an engaging zone for younger users with tunnels, slides, and climbable terrain. A complementary tower-and-slide structure introduces color and sensory variety.

Durability and accessibility were central to the project. High-performance turf and resilient tile surfacing ensure longevity and ease of maintenance. All play elements-from varied swings to a cooperative spinner-were selected to meet or exceed ADA accessibility standards and support a wide range of play interests and abilities. The result is a dynamic, nature-integrated playscape offering both quiet retreats and active, social experiences, establishing a new benchmark for inclusive community play.
