Officially opened in February 2025, Heritage Park in Tilden, Texas, features the county's first public splash pad as well as distinct play structures for children ages 2-5 and 5-12. Elements with climbing opportunities, slides, and interactive play elements are all tied together by a western theme inspired by the landscapes, traditions, and ranching history of McMullen County. The splash pad complements the western theme with interactive water features and a water windmill that pays tribute to the region's agricultural heritage. Complete with Kraftsman's KraftKoat spray deck coating, the splash pad boasts a slip-resistant surface to enhance safety and visual appeal. Nearby a large, covered pavilion features picnic tables and waste receptacles from Maglin to accommodate large gatherings or everyday use.
The custom poured-in-place surfacing provided by Robertson Recreational Surfaces - complete with western-inspired graphics including cacti, deer, and horseshoe tracks - transforms the ground into an interactive component of play. The surfacing also provides a cushioned surface to complement the myriad climbing opportunities, like the custom horse that serves as a sculpture and interactive feature. The rest of the park features amenities like drinking fountains, fitness stations, a BBQ pavilion, grills from Pilot Rock, and modular light columns with cameras.

Nestled along the scenic Frio River in Tilden, Texas, McMullen County Heritage Park represents a transformative investment in the community and serves as one of the most significant recreational destinations in the region. SKT Architects led the project, with fellow Texas-based multi-disciplinary firm Dunaway providing landscape architecture services and working alongside national firm KCI as the civil engineer. Through close collaboration with officials from the city of Tilden and McMullen County, community representatives, and the project team, the design evolved into a destination that balances recreation, multi-generational gathering spaces, and local identity. As the community's first large-scale public park, the project provides residents with access to state-of-the-art amenities while creating a lasting sense of place rooted in the culture and character of South Texas.

Bringing Play Close Home
Inspired by South Texas ranching traditions, rodeo culture, and the region's native wildlife, the play environment was carefully crafted to tell a story unique to McMullen County. Rather than relying on a generic playground theme, the design celebrates the landscapes and experiences familiar to local residents.

The playground features two distinct play structures designed specifically for children ages 2-5 and 5-12, ensuring age-appropriate challenges while allowing siblings to play together in one destination. Each structure offers a variety of climbing opportunities, slides, overhead events, and interactive play elements - like saloon doors and jail bars - that encourage children to build confidence, improve coordination, and develop social skills through active, imaginative play. Open sightlines throughout the playground also allow parents and caregivers to comfortably supervise children as they move between play activities.

Custom surfacing patterns guide children through the play space using wildlife footprints and cattle tracks, encouraging exploration and imaginative play. Native cacti imagery and natural color palettes further strengthen the connection to the South Texas landscape. A sweeping lasso pattern weaves through the site and wraps around the splash pad, creating a visual link between the various play elements while reinforcing the rodeo-inspired theme. At the center of the splash pad stands a large ranch-style windmill, one of the project's most recognizable features. A familiar sight throughout the South Texas countryside, the windmill serves as both a visual landmark and a tribute to the region's ranching heritage.

A Place For All
Beyond the play spaces, Heritage Park offers a diverse mix of amenities designed to serve residents of all ages. Walking trails provide opportunities for exercise and casual recreation, while fitness stations and a pickleball court encourage healthy lifestyles. A large, covered pavilion with restrooms and picnic areas accommodates community functions and special events, while a dedicated BBQ pavilion hosts community cookoffs and provides a home for the local high school barbecue team to practice, host events, and engage with the community.

Flooding & Funding
One of the most significant challenges faced during design was the site's proximity to the Frio River. Nearly half of the property is located within a floodplain, requiring careful consideration of grading, programming, infrastructure, and material selection. Design decisions were guided by the need to create a resilient park capable of withstanding periodic flooding while maintaining long-term functionality and minimizing maintenance requirements. Amenities were strategically located, grading was carefully coordinated, and durable site furnishings and materials were selected to respond to the realities of the riverfront setting. Grant funding assistance through Texas Parks and Wildlife helped expand the overall vision for the park, allowing additional amenities and improvements to be incorporated into the final design.

Crafting A Future
Today, McMullen County Heritage Park stands as a vibrant community centerpiece along the banks of the Frio River. By combining thoughtful design, meaningful storytelling, and a broad range of recreational opportunities, the project creates an experience that is distinctly South Texas. The park provides a lasting legacy for the residents of Tilden - a place where families gather, traditions continue, and community connections are strengthened for generations to come.
