The Hollwood Driveway
Los Angeles, Calif.

Award: Concrete Paver – Residential – Less than 3,000 square feet
Installer: Go Pavers
Product Manufacturer: Olsen Pavingstone

A flattop textured pavers design was installed in the driveway, giving the project a modern, contemporary look. Grey/charcoal colored pavers were chosen. The pattern used for the project was "Random Runner," meaning the pavers are laid side-by-side in a linear pattern. Thanks to planning and project team efficiency, the project was completed in less than a week.

West Entrance - Lincoln Park Zoo
Chicago, Ill.

Award: Clay Brick – Permeable – Residential/Commercial
Installer: LPS Pavement Company
Product Manufacturer: Pine Hall Brick

Visitors arriving to the western entrance of the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago are greeted by a beautiful hardscape of permeable clay brick pavers. Permeable pavers were specified for the 35-acre site, because city ordinances now call for stormwater to be treated on site and the alternative of installing underground holding tanks was cost-prohibitive. The clay pavers had three other advantages: they are aesthetically beautiful; work well with handicapped access; and are durable enough to withstand both the harsh winters of Chicago and heavy vehicles such as delivery trucks, fire engines and ambulances.

Converse College Johnson Plaza
Spartanburg, S.C.

Award: Clay Brick – Commercial
Installer: Roebuck Wholesale Nursery & Landscaping
Product Manufacturer: Pine Hall Brick

Broad granite steps, a 2' wide granite band inscribed with Converse College's seven core values, and the seal inscribed in a single slab of granite further enhance the space. Vehicular thresholds and pedestrian crosswalks incorporate 2???(R)???AE???(R)?" x 4" x 8" square edge clay brick, sand-set over a 6" concrete base and restrained by flush concrete ribbon curbing. The same sand-set paver is laid over a stone base at both upper and lower pedestrian plazas and connecting garden pathways, with polymeric sand swept into paver joints.

MEGA Snake and Ladder Paver Project
Dubai, U.A.E.

image

Award: Concrete Paver – Commercial – More than 15,000 square feet
Installer: DUCON Industries FZCO
Product Manufacturer: DUCON Industries FZCO

The MEGA Snake and Ladder Paver project serves as a centerpiece for a play area at a primary school located in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. The project was designed with the intention to push the boundaries of DUCON's design with pavers through the inclusion of numerous shapes and curves overlapping an absolute cubical structure. The selection of snakes and the associated colors were further chosen to highlight the various attributes of this design and associate detail of the job.

Award: Combination of Hardscape Products – Residential - More than 4,000 square feet
Installer: Mom's Landscaping & Design
Product Manufacturer: Travertine, Anchor Pavers, Bluestone, Ledgestone

The builder chose a lighter color travertine for this home's entertaining space instead of a darker color because lighter colors are a cooler temperature to walk on. They added in a bluestone inlay in the travertine to bring in some interest and to connect the bluestone in the pool house. The bluestone carried into the overlook firepit patio with 4" wide planking. The front yard includes a 6,000 square foot driveway with existing pavers reused for a decorative circle.

Founders Park
Johnson City, Tenn.

Award: Segmental Retaining Walls - Commercial
Installer: Jackson Jones Construction
Product Manufacturer: Old Castle/Adams Keystone Country Manor

During the design process, Jackson Jones Construction had to determine how to pour a concrete footing on solid bedrock in an active waterway, and how to move the creek to allow for the retaining wall construction on each side of the channel. They used concrete footings under each terrace section of the retaining wall and along the entire base of the wall, poured directly on bedrock. It was designed to have continuous terraced steps into the creek to create an inviting park setting and allow for more volume of water within the creek every time it rises. This required over a mile and a half of caps on four terraces, resulting in flood mitigation.

Upper Arlington, Ohio

Award: Segmental Retaining Walls – Residential
Installer: Hedge Landscaping
Product Manufacturer: Allan Block Retaining Walls, manufactured by Reading Rock

The multi-level patio includes a water feature with a two-wall system. The 8' wall in back retains the hillside with an interlocking system and six-degree batter. The wall in front is a non-retaining block with no batter, making it ideal for the sheer waterfall system. The three main columns have large planters on top of them, and a built-in grilling station is incorporated into the lower side of the patio with a column, panel and terraced sandstone outcropping.

Country Courtyard
Kearney, Neb.

Award: Concrete Paver – Residential More than 3,000 square feet
Installer: Grindstone Hardscapes
Product Manufacturer: Belgard

This design was put together using three different pavers, using the same accent bands throughout. The front entryway, driveway, and fireplace area all used a rustic Mega Arbel, while the sidewalks and main patio were slated with the texture of Urbanas and Rustic Slabs. All colors were chosen keeping the stucco, stone and brick finish of the house in mind.

Award: Combination of Hardscape Products – Residential – Less than 4,000 square feet
Installer: Lindgren Landscape
Product Manufacturer: Belgard

The homeowner's goals were to revamp the patios and landscape to include shade structures, fully equipped kitchen, fireplace, and an official bocce court. A 10' change in elevation made for a challenge in grading and safety, and is navigated by huge slab stairs, meandering down the slope. A custom drainage system was designed to evacuate water from the sunken, oyster shell covered bocce court.

Award: Combination of Hardscape Products – Commercial – Less than 20,000 square feet
Installer: GoldGlo Landscapes LLC
Product Manufacturer: EP Henry

The desire was to create an outdoor performing arts venue on a steep slope between the creek and an existing building. The steep slope consisted of fill that was disposed when the original building was installed at the center, so a large amount of soil needed to be exported and over 750 tons of gravel installed under the walls, steps and patios to replace the soil. With a timeframe of only three weeks to complete the project, the contractor's dedicated team committed to working long days and six-day work weeks to complete the project on schedule.

Award: Clay Brick - Residential
Installer: Artistic Pavers & Surfaces Inc.
Product Manufacturer: Whitacre Greer

This driveway and entrance to the builder's personal home is more than 125' long and includes a large motor court. To add interest to the space and visually connect the drive with the home's interior design, a mix of 4" x 8" and 3" x 9" bricks, as well as tumbled and wire-cut clay pavers were chosen. The varied installation patterns of the drive and courtyard create an architectural feel and add a Caribbean flair to the project.

Ithaca Commons Streetscape
East Syracuse, N.Y.

Award: Combination of Hardscape Products – Commercial – More than 20,000 square feet
Installer: Syrstone, Inc.
Product Manufacturer: Hanover Architectural Products

Ithaca Commons included over 67,000 square feet of vehicular grade concrete pavers, along with some granite pavers and granite curb. The concrete pavers used were 3" x 9", 4" x 4" and 6" x 12", in three colors. The work used alternating 25:75 color blends within each cell framed with diagonal accent bands. The pavers were installed with polymeric sand swept joints over an ASTM C-33 sand bed and a reinforced concrete slab with weep holes.

Award: Concrete Paver – Commercial – Less than 15,000 square feet
Installer: Hain Enterprises
Product Manufacturer: Basalite Concrete Products

Hardscape contractor Mark Hain donated the material and labor to create this 2,400 square foot design for the UNR Wolfpack baseball stadium. The baseball and wolf were created with specially made white and black rectangles. The teeth of the mascot, Wolfie, were cut by hand and inset. The stitching includes arcs in the pavement where the leather would normally come together and create a seam.

Firelane Road Residence
Menasha, Wis.

Award: Concrete Paver – Permeable – Residential
Installer: Stumpf Creative Landscaping
Product Manufacturer: County Materials

This home had to comply with DNR regulations requiring permeable surfaces on paved areas of waterfront properties, so three sizes of permeable pavers were used in a 75%/25% mix of a blended buff and solid cream color. The 4" x 8" size was used to create a double border with dark brown sailor course on the inside, edged with a soldier course of the same cream color used in the drive. The base layers included 12" of 2-3 inch clear stone on the bottom, topped with 12" of ???(R)???AE???? clear stone, and a final additional inch of smaller clear stone gravel on top.

As seen in LC/DBM magazine, October 2016.
