Will Truckee Trees Topple?

The Truckee housing complex along the shores of Donner Lake wants to remove 23 Jeffrey pines in its marina area.

A plan to cut down 23 Jeffrey pines at the Truckee housing complex along a Donner Lake marina in Northern California has some local residents protesting, and has prompted intervention from the local Sierra Club.

The subdivision’s board of directors has approved the tree felling, but needs the Truckee Planning Commission’s approval first.

The chairman of the Tahoe Area Sierra Club requested a full environmental review of the project, ???(R)???AE'?N????e'?N,A+citing concerns over logging, excavation, trenching and hardscape installation.

The subdivision was built in the 1970s and comprises 6,500 units. The subdivision’s general manager defended the plan, saying it would allow room for an ADA-compliant picnic area and still preserve enough shade trees. He noted the neighborhood association planted 5,100 trees on the property last year, and was quoted as saying about half the trees proposed for cutting are being taken down for forest health reasons.
