West Virginia ASLA Chapter
Year-In-Review

LASN 2023 Yearbook
by Jacob Burns, PLA, Chapter President

The West Virginia Chapter has had a busy, exciting, and challenging year during 2023.? In March, we were excited to host ASLA National CEO, Torrey Carter-Coneen during our chapter luncheon at the West Virginia Construction and Design Expo (WVEXPO).? During WVEXPO, WVASLA also hosted a dinner for members of the WVU Landscape Architecture Program junior year design studio.? Torey and students participated in a walkthrough of various projects in the Charleston area and were able to see what local landscape architects had been designing over the last few years.

In early August, we learned that a recommendation had been made to the West Virginia University Board of Governors to eliminate the Landscape Architecture program due to budget cuts.? Immediately, members of WVASLA went into action to defend the program, and started a letter writing campaign to support the program.? Chapter members worked to educate university leadership about the important role of Landscape Architecture in the future of West Virginia. ASLA National, numerous other state chapters, and professionals across the country gave their support and efforts to save the program.? In September, we learned that the BSLA program at WVU had been saved and we are incredibly thankful for the support received!
