The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Watkins Regional Park is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

The theme of the ADA accessible playground features Auntie Em and Uncle Henry's Kansas farm, Dorothy's house, Munchin Land, the poppy field, the Emerald City and Dorothy's attempt to get home via hot air balloon, and a yellow brick road. Dorthy's ruby slippers were even adapted to be playground slides!

 

However, one of the main components that makes this playground come alive is the PlayBound Poured-in-Place (PIP) safety surfacing. It helps the children to feel like they were actually in the storybook by walking on a yellow brick road!

PlayBound PIP is a 2-layer system consisting of a basemat of 100% post-consumer recycled SBR and polyurethane and a top surface consisting of recycled post-industrial EPDM rubber or TPV Granule and aromatic or aliphatic urethane binder. Because the rubber and urethane components are mixed and applied on site, custom colors, logos, and geometric shapes can be incorporated in to the surface.

Since the playground at Watkins Regional Park opened, it continues to be the main attraction at the park, pulling visitors from Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Sparks@Play was the exclusive distributor of the Landscape Structures commercial playground equipment on the playground.
