Washington Park, established in the 1870s, is the premier park of New York's capital city. The "Olmstedian Park" spans 81 acres of natural beauty with 100 species of trees and a five-acre lake. When the time came to update the park's aging playground, design priorities included the creation of a flexible, welcoming environment that supported informal gathering and shared community experiences within the park setting. The result is a playground that serves as an extension of its natural surroundings, incorporating a balance of nature-based play opportunities between structured play equipment and informal, landscape-driven experiences.

Play spaces are organized to encourage social interaction across age groups, fostering opportunities for caregivers, families, and individuals to engage collectively. The sizeable footprint allowed for four distinct areas: an age-appropriate play area for children ages 5 and under, an action zone filled with swinging and spinning play, a performance area and embankment to ignite imaginative play, and a challenge space, featuring a custom 23-foot-tall play tower, for high-level physical and parkour play for all ages. Blended boundaries emphasize interaction with natural materials, topography, and vegetation to create a more immersive, exploratory play environment that encourages users to interact with the space in dynamic, self-directed ways. Gathering areas are intentionally integrated throughout, allowing for active and passive use within a cohesive landscape framework.
