Each year, the Virginia chapter recognizes two students, one at each of the accredited landscape architectural programs within the state-University of Virginia, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University-based upon the recommendations of the faculty. The student scholarship recipients receive a certificate and a monetary award at the annual meeting.

 
2021 Award Recipients
Reid Farnsworth - University of Virginia

Reid Farnsworth is a MLA graduate of the UVA School of Architecture from Nashville, Tennessee. At the A-School, Reid worked with the Center for Cultural Landscapes, Landscape Studies Initiative, Fabrication Lab, Milton Land Lab, and Student Association of Landscape Architects. As a history major with a career in environmental education and forest maintenance, Reid was drawn to landscape architecture's socio-ecological approach that could blend broad interests in cultural history, landscape maintenance, fabrication, and planting design. Reid's research interests include the intersection of landscape architecture with issues of land and resource equity as well as designing tools for stakeholder-driven landscape decision-making. Reid also loves engaging with as many physical and digital tools as possible, from CNC routing to video game engine visualization.
Joey Troia - Virginia Tech
Joey Troia is an undergraduate studying landscape architecture at Virginia Tech, with a minor in American Studies. Presently, his interest lies in understanding the cultural and physical composition of space, and design's agency in the collective imagining of just futures. Joey hopes to return to school after working in the field to explore problems of urbanization, sociology, and critical geography. Sketching and reading inform his work heavily, and outside of these passions he also loves baseball, cooking, and running.
