The U.S. Department of Agriculture has committed $188 million to preserve vital forestlands, supporting rural economies and ecological balance.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced a $188 million investment to protect economically and ecologically important forestlands in 22 states and one island territory, encompassing over 245,000 acres. As part of the Forest Legacy program, these funds will facilitate 34 projects for rural economies.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack emphasized the significance of these forestlands, stating, "These forests... are critical to the health of our planet and the livelihoods of millions of Americans." By providing financial support through the Forest Legacy program, these projects aim to ensure the preservation of working forests that offer economic and social benefits to local communities.

To conserve forestlands under the threat of conversion to non-forest uses, states will utilize land easements and purchases with the assistance of tribes, non-profit organizations, and input from relevant stakeholders.

For a comprehensive list of projects funded in fiscal year 2023 and information on applying for fiscal year 2024 funding, interested parties can visit the USDA's website. The Forest Service regional offices are also available to provide further details on the program.

Through these conservation efforts, the USDA aims to transform the nation's food system, promote resilience in local and regional food production, enhance access to healthy and nutritious food, develop new markets for farmers, invest in rural infrastructure and clean energy, and prioritize equity throughout the Department.
