The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced the winners of its Smart City Challenge and Every Place Counts Design Challenge. Columbus, Ohio, won the $40 million Smart City Challenge. Spokane, Wash.; Ramsey County, Minn.; Nashville, Tenn.; and Philadelphia, Pa., are the winners of the Every Place Counts Design Challenge. Seventy-eight cities applied to the Smart City Challenge, which sought out the city that would become the first in the country to integrate innovative technologies, including self-driving cars, connected vehicles and smart sensors, into their transportation network. Ultimately, Columbus was chosen because of their holistic vision for technology helping all residents to move more easily, including not just transportation improvements, but also improving health care access for those who need it most.
