Recently, stats about 2022 U.S. greenhouse gas emissions were released and show that they increased 1.3% despite renewable energy surpassing coal energy. The estimates were made by environmental consultancy Rhodium Group and shows that increases were caused by upticks from buildings, industry, and transport despite strong clean energy legislation last year and emission targets under the Paris climate agreement.

 
However, for the first time in over six decades, wind, solar, and hydropower generated 22% of the country's electricity, compared to 20% of the total energy from coal, yet the country still saw a rise in emissions which makes the country the second largest source of emissions after China.

According to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), we can only add 300 gigatons of additional carbon to the atmosphere to postpone warming and reduce emissions by 65% by 2030 and zero percent by 2040.

This trend in 2022, puts the U.S. behind President Biden's climate goals, Rhodium Group states in the report. However, with the added hurdle of a global energy crisis that prompted the administration to call for fuel supplies and release millions of barrels of crude to dip the record-breaking gas prices domestically.

The report goes on to say that to halve emissions by the end of the decade, more aggressive policies are needed including implementing the landmark Inflation Reduction Act in a timely fashion that would lead to major clean energy subsidies. Executives have also said that to achieve this now seemingly far-fetched goal, Biden's climate goals are dependent on reforming the U.S. infrastructure permitting rules that now features lots of red tape.
