The client initially contacted me after they visited a stone yard in South Florida.

The client also loved the stone work in Italy and wanted his property to incorporate as many stone details as possible. They selected a type of Tennessee Crab Orchard stone and wanted this one stone to be used as the theme throughout the landscape.

In the front yard we created an enclosed parking court. The parking court surface was a 3/8" pea gravel surface also from Tennessee. All of the stone was cut and fabricated on site from large slabs of flagstone. Some of the slabs were up to 7'.

 
The backyard and sides were enclosed using a combination of stone walls and lush tropical foliage for privacy.
Some of the features, like the outdoor barbeque area were designed as we progressed with the installation. We would come up with sketches for the style and finish details of some features on site.

It was challenging to use one stone for everything and make sure that it looks good and not too busy.
We know that the planting design work would be an integral part in making the hardscape 'fit'.

Each step of the way during the installation process we would prepare up to 3 samples of the pattern and style of the details. This was necessary in order to see which patterns worked best together.

Being that the property is on a canal with Ocean access, all of the hardscape had to be designed to accommodate access for boating materials and supplies.


The upcoming Hardscapes Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
