Timmons Group is a multi-disciplined engineering, design, and technology firm recognized nationally as a "Best Firm to Work For" by Engineering News-Record. With over 72 years in business and a dozen offices throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, they provide landscape architecture services alongside civil engineering, environmental, economic development, GIS/geospatial technology, surveying, and other services. Timmons Group is dedicated to being an employer of choice and helping their clients achieve their vision, resulting in shared success. As Landscape Architects within an inter-disciplinary field, Timmons Group works in nearly every market, including parks and recreation, urban design and planning, ecological/resilience, residential/multi-family, energy and renewables, healthcare, K-12, higher education, government, and commercial projects. The firm consists of about 1,000 employees led by 77 principals, two of whom are Landscape Architects. Firmwide, there are approximately 30 staff practicing in the field of landscape architecture and 16 of those are licensed.

The Otis, Richmond, Virginia

A: The Otis is a multi-use development that offers classy, industrial style living and shopping to the Richmond neighborhood. Encompassing an entire city block, the nearly 480,000-square-foot development includes 350 units, 128,000 square feet of garage parking, and 9,000 square feet of high-end amenity space. Timmons Group collaborated closely with the architecture team to cultivate amenities promote social connection through a variety of gathering spaces. The design pays homage to the industrial style of the neighborhood and architecture, using steel planters and varying hardscapes. The internal courtyards contain a sophisticated pool deck, grilling gardens, a turf seating area, and large planted areas. The exterior courtyards provide an overlook to the neighborhood and include a dog park, grill garden, and covered lounge. The urban streetscape is decorated with native plantings, bike racks, and outdoor dining.

Tapestry West, Henrico County, VA

B: The Tapestry West Apartments sit adjacent to the Kinsale Capital Group's headquarters in the new Westwood neighborhood of Henrico County. Spanning a 2.1-acre tract at Maywill and Thalboro Streets, the property comprises a five-story, 200,000-square-foot building with 262 apartment units. The complex offers a variety of amenities, including a state-of-the-art clubroom, grilling garden with pizza oven and green egg smoker, fitness center, meditation room, resident pool deck, and pet spa, among others.

Altria Headquarters Expansion, Henrico County, Virginia

C: The Altria Corporate Headquarters facility originally designed by Landscape Architect Charles Gillette and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Timmons Group's contributions to the site have spanned over a decade, involving a modernization of the original 1950s site layout while respecting the landscape's historical nature. Their latest and most influential effort is the addition of a brand-new modern building that carefully weaves in the next generation of paving and planting while linking the new building to campus.

Virginia State University, Chesterfield County, VA

D: The former site of historic Simms Hall that was damaged by fire in 2016 is now the home of the brand-new Appomattox River Outlook and plaza. The fire left the historic mechanic arts building unsafe for occupancy, so the university began demolition in 2018 and converted the pad into an overlook. Timmons Group was hired as the civil engineer and Landscape Architect. The overlook, which provides a spectacular view of the Appomattox River, is now an open hardscape and grassy overlook that is used as a gathering space for staff and students.

Community Master Plan, Kingsmill, VA

E: Timmons Group team worked with the Kingsmill Community Services Association to lead a detailed amenities and facilities master plan for Kingsmill on the James. The year-long process began with a detailed inventory and analysis phase to assess existing site conditions of the landscape, amenities, and recreational facilities in order to evaluate future capital improvements. The final long-range planning document for the Kingsmill Community Services Association is now used as a critical tool to prioritize recommendations for future capital improvements aligned closely with operating budgets over a 20-year period.

Stone Brewing, Richmond, Virginia

F: Timmons Group provided environmental services, geotechnical engineering, survey, site engineering, and landscape architecture for this 200,000-square-foot production brewery and distribution facility on 14 acres of land just east of downtown Richmond. Stone Brewing is investing $74 million to construct buildings and grounds that will feature two distinct landscape experiences: an employee garden with intimate areas of respite and a flexible open lawn for company gatherings, as well as a public entrance with connections to the brewery, restaurant, James River, and surrounding neighborhoods. The restaurant will feature beautifully landscaped gardens where visitors can enjoy an inviting atmosphere.

Taylor Farm Park, Henrico County, Virginia

G: Timmons Group was hired to oversee the Master Plan process, collaborating with Rhodeside & Harwell (see pg 70) to design a state-of-the-art, $16 million regional park. Of the 100 acres, 33 are made up of wetlands, resource protection areas, and perennial streams. The master plan focuses on five main areas, all connected by a network of internal roads and shared-use paths. The Nature-Based Play and Exploration Area will include a spray park and accessible and inclusive nature-themed playscapes. The Active Sports Area will have a large destination skate park and a bike skills course. The Memorial Garden and Lawn Area will have a flexible event space as well as a Public Safety and Service Memorial. The Taylor Farm Interpretive Area will pay homage to the Taylor family farm with community gardens, and educational program opportunities. The Neighborhood Activity Area will have a smaller nature-based play area, outdoor fitness area, and community plaza space.
