Taylor Farm Park

Sandston, Virginia
by Timmons Group

Taylor Farm Park has the largest number of accessible play features in the county, the largest all-wheel park in Central Virginia, the first memorial for local service members, and the only paved pump track in the state.

The Parks Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Taylor Farm Park is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Set to inspire creativity and exploration, Taylor Farm Park (TFP) is a 99-acre public park in Sandston (Varina district), Virginia designed by the multi-disciplinary firm, Timmons Group, and Rhodeside & Harwell. TFP aims to connect with the community by providing spaces where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can unite through play. The park provides access to a high-quality recreational space in Sandston--an underserved area of Henrico--and seeks to improve residents' quality of life with recreational amenities. In its first year of operation, beginning in the summer of 2024, it attracted nearly one million visitors, which has had a positive economic impact on local Sandston businesses as visitors to the park spend money on local food and service. As the first community park to be built in the Varina district since 1982, TFP fills critical gaps in the area.

The park features include nature and water play areas, an "all-wheel" park, a memorial, an events lawn, and a fully accessible mile-long trail. The custom-built playground blends into the natural landscape, offering treehouses, ziplines, rope net climbers, slides, and more. The water design elements are composed of a spray park and an interactive play stream with stepping stones, shallow pools, and mini waterfalls. The "all-wheel" park offers a 17,000-square-foot skate park, a 12,000-square-foot pump track, and a BMX dirt course. These features are enjoyed by visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. The memorial garden for veterans and first responders and events lawn lies at the main entrance of the park, welcoming visitors into the versatile and imaginative atmosphere. A key focus from engagement with the community was the inclusive and accessible playground featuring sensory features, wheel-chair friendly equipment, and designs accommodating children of all abilities.
