Throughout this seminar participants will be presented with current legislation to fund schoolyard improvements. It will also present how, by being proactive in promoting the landscaping profession, we can help young audiences become our clients of the future. Examples of community outreach efforts and K-12 educational programs will be presented to show that landscape professionals can implement these programs in their communities. Not only is this a way to advertise our profession but it can create extra income and help diversify the profession. The audience will learn about existing resources that can facilitate implementing educational programs for young audiences. Many other professional organizations are already implementing K-12 education programs, so it is time that landscape professionals promote and sponsor landscape educational programs and understand how this will translate in benefitting their professional practices.

Arnaldo Cardona
The topic of landscape education has been a very personal endeavor for Arnaldo D. Cardona. His first bachelor's was a pre-professional degree in Architecture (1989) but after meeting noted landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx he decided to pursue a degree in Landscape Architecture. For this, he enrolled in the City College of New York Urban Landscape Program, finishing his BSLA in 1992. Because of his interest in the arts, Mr. Cardona continued graduate studies in the Art and Art Education program at Teachers College, Columbia University finishing a master's in art and Art Education in 1994. His Master's project was an interdisciplinary curriculum guide in Architecture. After this he became an adjunct professor teaching Art and Studio in Landscape Architecture courses.
While keeping his practice as a Landscape Designer, in 1995 Mr. Cardona became a teacher at New York City Public Schools and later received a scholarship from City College of New York to finish a Master of Science in Education. His thesis was about the effectiveness of a curriculum (in Architecture) to master reading skills among special education students. As a teacher he designed and implemented summer and after-school programs in Architecture for elementary and middle school students. In 2002 he became a Middle School Coordinator and wrote grants and coached teachers in writing curricula in Art, Engineering and Architecture. At the same time, he collaborated with AIA Learning by Design as an instructor for summer programs and as Architect-Educator at a non-profit organization in New York City. In addition, he was an adjunct professor at colleges in New Jersey and New York, teaching courses in assessment in special education, and integrating math and art in childhood settings.
Cardona was a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) from 2005 to 2022. He was a member of ASLA's Committee in Education for two years, has written many articles about K-12 education and has participated in webinars about the importance of educating the new generation of landscape architects. Mr. Cardona is a retired landscape architect and educator and is the author of the following books: 1- K-12 Landscape Architecture Education: An Interdisciplinary Curriculum Guide for Art, STEM and Vocational/Trade Educators (2021) 2- K-12 Architecture Education: An Interdisciplinary Curriculum Guide for Art, Design, Stem and Career/Technical Teachers (2022).
