The Hardscapes Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .The Woodlands at Furman is a retirement community adjacent to Furman University in Greenville, SC. As part of a major building project, new outdoor amenity spaces were added as an extension of the building's common areas. Developed through a process involving resident feedback, the plan features a central open space that serves as a flexible event area for outdoor gatherings that can accommodate a tent setup. Around this are a variety of smaller seating spaces, plus terraces for outdoor dining. Pergola-covered seating areas and a small building containing restrooms, storage, are more covered seating help frame the central open space. ADA access was provided throughout.
