The Woodlands at Furman

Greenville, South Carolina
by Keziah Olsen, LASN

The Hardscapes Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

The Woodlands at Furman is a retirement community adjacent to Furman University in Greenville, SC. As part of a major building project, new outdoor amenity spaces were added as an extension of the building's common areas. Developed through a process involving resident feedback, the plan features a central open space that serves as a flexible event area for outdoor gatherings that can accommodate a tent setup. Around this are a variety of smaller seating spaces, plus terraces for outdoor dining. Pergola-covered seating areas and a small building containing restrooms, storage, are more covered seating help frame the central open space. ADA access was provided throughout.

To create interest in the large, central, paved area, a variety of materials and patterns were utilized. The central oval used "Granito Hex" pavers from Unilock, accented by radiating bands of "Holland Premier" pavers. A combination of "Beacon Hill" and "Holland Premier" pavers from Unilock define the smaller seating areas around the central space. New stairs and retaining walls were made of brick to match the existing brick walls used on campus. A porous rubber path from Rubberway was installed in a lower natural area to create seating areas among the existing trees with minimal impact.
