The Gardens at Pillar and Post

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada
by SDG Landscape Architects

Designed by SDG Landscape Architects, The Gardens at Pillar and Post reimagines what was primarily a parking lot as a living tribute to Claude Monet and the emotive power of romantic garden design.

The Commercial & Retail Development Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. The Gardens at Pillar and Post is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Nestled within the historic charm of Niagara-on-the-Lake, The Gardens at Pillar and Post represent a remarkable transformation of once-flattened, underutilized land into a six-acre immersive landscape experience.

Drawing direct inspiration from Monet's celebrated gardens in Giverny, the landscape is conceived as an impressionist painting brought to life. A reinterpreted lily pond forms the visual and emotional centerpiece, complete with a Japanese green bridge that anchors long sightlines and reflective views. Layered perennial borders, rose-draped archways, and meandering pathways create soft transitions between garden rooms, encouraging discovery while maintaining operational flow for events and hospitality programming.

Beyond aesthetics, the gardens were strategically planned as a premier wedding and event destination. Three distinct ceremony sites allow concurrent celebrations, each maintaining privacy through planting buffers and subtle grade changes. Couples may exchange vows beside the Monet-inspired pond, beneath climbing roses, or inside a restored rustic barn constructed from reclaimed 200-year-old timber-demonstrating thoughtful integration of heritage materials within a contemporary hospitality framework.

Seasonality drives the planting strategy and revenue potential alike. Spring bulbs, summer roses, autumn foliage, and winter activations-including firepits and a skating rink-extend usability year-round. The result is a commercially resilient, emotionally resonant landscape where horticulture, placemaking, and romance intersect-an enduring testament to Monet's devotion to beauty and to the timeless narratives unfolding within it.
