The FAST Act Gets AASHTO Support

Lack of Funding for Transportation Has Led to Lost Jobs

The FAST Act would help provide long-term funds for road maintenance and construction.

AASHTO has announced that they are advocates for the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. The association recently wrote a piece explaining their concern over the lack of funding that can be applied to roads and other surfaces. Randy Guillot, chairman of the American Trucking Association, noted his worries in a testimony he gave to the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation that there could be a decrease of over $32 billion over the next year in state and federal user transportation fee income.

Guillot said, "This does not include losses to states that rely on retail sales tax revenue for their transportation budgets. This loss of revenue will force the cancellation of critical transportation projects, putting more than 400,000 people out of work."

For these reasons, AASHTO has given their support towards a short-term infusion of funds to prevent the loss of jobs and to help the progress of current projects. Furthermore, the reauthorization of the FAST Act can provide a long-term benefit for roads and transportation projects.

Guillot went on to say that there were insufficient investments in the road system before COVID, resulting in a much worse situation after the pandemic started. With this understanding, he expressed urgency in saying, "With traffic down - allowing for more lane closures - unemployment at historic highs, and interest rates and fuel prices at historic lows, now is the perfect time to accelerate transportation projects, not starve them of revenue."

With the support of AASHTO, the hope for road maintenance and construction employees is to have the FAST Act passed as soon as possible.
