As a proud and longtime sponsor of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), The Chandler Company wholeheartedly supports the organization's Climate Action Now plan. Landscape architects are at the forefront of bringing expertise to nature-based solutions, technological innovation, and strategic thinking that provides benefits to nature and people. At The Chandler Company, it has also been our mission to be consistently vigilant and to innovate when it comes to our sustainability practices.
That's why The Chandler Company has partnered with the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and the school's program, the Sustainable Manufacturing Alliance for Research and Training Industrial Assessment Center (SMART IAC). Endorsed by the U.S. Department of Energy, these assessments performed by teams of engineering faculty and students provide consulting services focusing on energy, waste, and productivity. According to UCI officials, the assessment typically yields a 10-20% energy and productivity savings.
Along with the SMART IAC, The Chandler Company regularly reviews the sustainability initiatives of companies throughout its supply chain asking for documentation regarding their efforts to utilize renewable energy. The Chandler Company has also been instrumental in our trade association, the American Composite Manufacturing Association, having a stated vision to "make composites the sustainable material of preference."
Fiberglass planters themselves provide an energy-saving function since they have a life span up to four times longer than cement planters and their light weight means shipping costs are less and friendlier to the environment. The Chandler Company is also in the process of installing solar panels at our Santa Ana, California, headquarters, which will make our manufacturing process even more sustainable.
As with many manufacturers in today's environment, initiatives to save energy and be more sustainable are an ongoing process. One long-term sustainability goal is to offer planters made with "bio-based" resins as they become available. In addition, The Chandler Company will continue to review its supply chain, look for additional ways to make the manufacture of our fiberglass planters even more energy efficient, and partner with the bright young minds of academia to benefit nature and people.
