The goals of the research reviews are to understand and summarize the current state of knowledge regarding landscape architecture solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises, synthesize the research literature and provide insights based on data and science, and create accessible executive summaries in plain language for policymakers, community advocates, and practicing landscape architects.

The ASLA Fund is offering $25,000 in research grants to develop reviews investigating the benefits of landscape architecture climate and biodiversity solutions. The grants are available to both ASLA members and non-members in academia, with the aim of creating accessible executive summaries in plain language for policymakers, community advocates, and landscape architects. The first two grants in 2023 will focus on landscape architecture solutions to biodiversity loss and extreme heat, with the grant period running from June to the end of the year. Both 2023 grants will receive $12,500.

ASLA President Emily O'Mahoney said that landscape architecture educators are key to driving forward research on solutions to the climate and biodiversity crises, and that the work helps build the foundations for landscape architecture as a design science. Proposals are due by April 28 and will be peer reviewed.

According to ASLA CEO Torey Carter Conneen, "This critically important work helps build the foundations for landscape architecture as design science and support efforts to designate landscape architecture a STEM discipline."
