?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Let me show you something cool,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? said hydromulching supervisor Ray Dennison in September . . .
Dennison was treating exposed-soil berms at a construction site in Irvine, Calif. He idled the big stainless-steel tanker manufactured by Apex Curb & Turf, LLC and switched it to two-cannon mode.
Driver Sergio Rivera hopped onto the spray deck, and the pair opened up with the twin guns. Fixed with long-distance nozzles, the Apex water guns, or ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????monitors,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? can send streams of hydromulch mixture close to 250 ft. in opposite directions. The option allows the big piece of equipment treat opposite slopes of a highway with a single pass.
The big Apex machine is arguably the most capable hydro unit in the world today. This kind of firepower doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t come cheap, however. Washington state-based Apex makes the stainless-steel tanks, which are sold with pumps, mixers and supporting equipment for about $115,000. Mated to Sterling or Kenworth trucks, the burly hydromulchers retail for close to $210,000, Apex spokeswoman Jayne Richardson said. (Additional options can raise that number, however.)
Given the investment, just 12 of the heavy-duty tankers had been built by Oct., 2007.
For companies that treat large areas, bigger options are economical ones. In one test run, the 4,000-gallon Apex tankers covered close to 48 acres in a 24-hour period, Richardson said. Many users report results of around 30 acres a day, she added.
To make an operation profitable, tank size needs to be tailored to the type of work your company plans to do. Experts say that choosing the right machine is the single most important decision you?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??ll make when it comes to hydroseeding or hydromulching.
There are many tank options on the market of 1,000 gallons or less that can be mounted on trailers, pickup trucks or utility vehicles. Contractors who plan to use their tanks mostly for hydroseeding have different requirements than those planning to apply heavy-duty mulch mixtures. Another factor is access. Work in backyards will need much smaller machines than projects measuring an acre or more.
And consider a vehicle?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s footprint. Hydroseeders used on golf courses usually have fat tires to minimize impact on turf.
The bottom line, experts say, is that anyone planning to go into hydro work for themselves should have some experience using the equipment. Barring that, do substantial research before you buy. Manufacturer web sites are one place to start.
