According to a report by Smart Growth America, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and the National Complete Streets Coalition entitled "Dangerous by Design 2019," 49,340 U.S. pedestrians were struck and killed by vehicles between 2008 and 2017. According to Smart Growth America's website, "That's more than 13 people per day, or one person every hour and 46 minutes. It's the equivalent of a jumbo jet full of people crashing-with no survivors-every single month."The study blames years of focus on vehicle and driver safety in addition to a lack of progress in pedestrian street safety for the tragic numbers, and it includes lists of the most dangerous states for walking as well as the most dangerous counties. Landscape architects can make a difference in this area by making pedestrian safety a priority in streetscape designs. Smart Growth America's website hosts an interactive map documenting every crash involving a pedestrian that has been recorded since 2008. Users can search for any U.S. city or state and see details about each fatality listed. To view the map or to download the full report, click HERE.
