To avoid unintended accidental contact between chemicals and students, make sure your crew properly stores the pesticides you apply in a restricted or secluded area, and disposes of any leftover or unused chemicals. Additionally, chemical storage buildings should be located at least 300 feet from any well. The same buffer zone should be maintained between the facilities and any surface water such as ditches, ponds or streams.

No one was believed to have suffered any ill effects from being exposed to the chemical, but students were checked out by the Indian River County Fire Rescue emergency medical technicians. Students exposed were asked to shower and put their clothes in a black plastic bag.

According to Indian River County School District officials, a quart container of the insecticide was uncovered around 10 a.m. on January 31, when a class of about 24 students was working in the garden on the school grounds. Although only six were in the area where the bottle was uncovered, all the members of the class were kept outside while their classroom was ventilated.

Indian River County Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Brian Nolan said the air inside the school was also being tested as a precaution.

According to the National Pesticide Information Center Malathion “is a yellow to brown liquid with a skunk- or garlic-like odor.” According to the center, it is “very low in toxicity” for animals. Effects of malathion on human health and the environment depend on how much is present and the length and frequency of exposure. Effects also depend on the health of a person and/or certain environmental factors.
