SMMA Symmes, Maini & McKee Associates Multi-disciplinary approach to site harmonics by Jeffrey Denzak, ASLA, APA The demand for the intricate design and redesign for communities and urban centers in recent years has created a healthy market for Landscape Architects. Communities want to create harmony between green space and area businesses and residences, while urban centers require different harmonics, which bring about increased pedestrian traffic and business through unique design elements. With such diversified projects, it is best for a Landscape Architecture firm to have a broad scope. One way to do this is through a multiple-disciplinary firm, which incorporates architects, engineers and contractors, giving Landscape Architects the power to put a project in the hands of people they trust. Symmes, Maini and McKee Associates' (SMMA) integrated approach to the delivery of planning and design services offers substantial benefits to clients. Team members from all disciplines work together--from project initiation to completion--to develop uniquely tailored, coordinated, and appropriate solutions to the complex challenges of each client's program. This collaborative approach is the keystone in SMMA's ability to support the quality, schedule, and financial goals of each client. About the Firm Founded in 1955, SMMA, with a staff of 200 professionals, is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a regional office in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The firm has been ranked, by Engineering News Record, as one of the Top 500 design firms in the United States and, by Building Design and Construction, as one of the Top 50 architecture and engineering firms. Repeat business from established clients has averaged nearly 70% for the last five years. SMMA's Planning and Landscape Architecture department is staffed by professionals trained in Landscape Architecture, master planning, and urban design. In addition, some staff members have specialized experience in ecological assessment, wetlands delineation, and environmental permitting. The department works closely on all projects with SMMA's civil engineers to provide comprehensive services for environmental analyses and on all aspects of permitting and site design. Interior design and space planning About SMMA's Planning and Landscape Architectural Services SMMA's approach begins with the intent of establishing harmony, balance, and order. Each site has unique attributes, problems and resolutions. We observe, interpret, and then emphasize that site's most distinctive qualities. Our design goal is to bring the project into harmony with its natural, architectural, and cultural surroundings. This approach is well-suited to site development and the integration of a project into existing conditions. In addition to imaginative site design, successful project development depends upon the thoughtful and careful siting and massing of buildings. SMMA's full-service approach creates opportunities for team collaboration and enhances project coordination. As an example, our environmental planners, LAs, and civil engineers work together with our electrical engineers to illuminate the landscape design-integrating required lighting, accent lighting, and landscape lighting into a coordinated image. SMMA's Boston-based Landscape Architects Mark J. Zarillo, FASLA, AICP, is the Principal-in-charge of SMMA's Planning and Landscape Architecture department.
