Sikora Wells Appel is a landscape architectural firm located in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Established in 1979, the firm's approach to design is rooted in an understanding of a community's history and culture, a site's context and ecology and their own interest in art in the landscape. Sikora Wells Appel seeks to emulate the innovative qualities of the firm's history as they explore new approaches to design. As principal of the firm, Joe Sikora brings over 25 years of experience in planning, landscape architecture and urban design. The staff of nine is committed to meeting the special needs of each individual client. Their portfolio includes institutional, academic, corporate, residential and public work.

Rowan College at Burlington County, Mt. Laurel, N.J.

At the heart of Rowan College at Burlington County's campus, Sikora Wells Appel created a new Quad that was designed in concert with the Student Success Center. As the central activity hub, the Student Success Center Plaza was created with flexibility in mind and accommodates daily outdoor dining, outdoor classes, and other events. The Success Center Plaza boasts nearly 400 linear feet of amphitheater bluestone steps in addition to large-scale concrete seat wall planters, which are filled with ornamental grasses, perennials, shrubs, and flowering trees. By contrast, the Grove is a more intimate space, incorporating a variety of shade trees, groundcover planting, stone dust gravel, and moveable tables and chairs. A network of new walking paths serves to connect students to each building as well as the parking lots and other areas of campus.

East Conservatory Plaza at Longwood Gardens, Kennet Square, Pa.

Located in Kennet Square, Pa., the design for the East Conservatory Plaza includes a comfort station building buried in a sculpted landform, a plaza space and accessible pathways. The landform is composed of five precisely formed terraces, which emerge from a wilder woodland edge of native trees and grasses. Tucked under the landform is the new building, which contains the largest living green wall in North America. The green wall covers over 4,000 square feet and encloses visitors in a rich tapestry of vegetation, transforms a walk down a corridor into a breath-taking new experience, and culminates at a still water feature.

Albert Einstein Medical Center, Montgomery, Pa.

With a vision of creating a "landscape for healing," the firm utilized a natural and sustainable design approach for this 90-acre hospital campus in Montgomery, which opened in late September of 2012. With a project goal of obtaining LEED Certification, the landscape design includes a constructed wetland, rain gardens, extensive tall grass meadows, 250 transplanted existing trees, and bioswales. Sikora Wells Appel also designed a half-acre entrance garden that includes seating, a large water feature, donor recognition and lush plantings.

League Island Park at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Philadelphia, Pa.

Physically located above the original League Island in the Delaware River prior to the expansion of the Navy Yard property eastward, the 2.5-acre park celebrates the island's origins. An expansive storm water collection system, designed as a constructed wetland with native grasses, edges the central mounded lawn oval. A footbridge leads pedestrians from the perimeter walking paths to the "island." Decorative wood pilings have been incorporated as lighting features and remnants of large, blue stone plinths provide opportunities for seating. The picnic grove with movable tables and chairs provides additional, casual seating.

Roosevelt Plaza Park Pop Ups, Camden, N.J.

Roosevelt Plaza Park Pop Ups were temporary installations located in downtown Camden in front of City Hall for 3 summers. The purpose of the park was to enliven the plaza through low cost and flexible place making strategies. Designs brought flexible seating, shade, lush plantings, and art to a once undesirable space. Each installation transformed the park into a dynamic and exciting place to go. The iterative place making experiment at RPP helped change perceptions about public space in downtown Camden.

Temple University Founder's Garden, Philadelphia, Pa.

Sikora Wells Appel led a 3.5 million-dollar reimagining of a historic, 1960s-era Modernist sunken garden, originally designed by renowned landscape architect George Patton. While honoring the original design intent of the garden, many updates and additions were made, including a new water feature, new lighting, seating, paving and planting.
