Shade 'n Net Q and A with the Experts

A Conversation with Rudy Martinez, CEO and President
by Staff

What do you attribute the growth of the fabric structure industry to?

The primary growth has been due to education of our product and the acceptance of the HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) material as a long-term solution to a variety of problems. Our clients have seen the emergence of so many uses for cable-tension structures and sails, that the ideas and needs have just naturally expanded. From playgrounds to amphitheaters, the systems have evolved and become a common tool for architects and designers to incorporate into new builds and to improve existing sites. To have so many choices on how to turn outdoor areas into more functional, user-friendly spaces has only compounded the growth and popularity of our industry.

Do you foresee continued growth in the industry, and if so, why?

Absolutely. Each year there are new needs for outdoor protection. Recent developments over the last few years would be social distancing and pickle ball courts. Our job is to stay innovative to meet each new challenge and new trend so we can provide shade solutions. This coupled with widespread acceptance and embracing of this relatively new technology, will ensure a permanent place for our product with those professionals seeking fresh new solutions.

What are the most popular uses for cable-tension systems?

The primary interest years ago was for playgrounds for heat relief and UV protection. There was tremendous pushback from the schools in the early days and no one was familiar with this fabric and no one thought they would last as long as they do. Since then, the systems have been used to cover military training areas/aircraft/equipment, stadium seating/ticketing areas, parking lots (for heat and hail protection), outdoor malls, churches, bleachers, sport courts, water treatment plants, work/break areas, shooting ranges, and the list just doesn't end.

What have been some hurdles for your product?

Initially, familiarizing potential clients with the upside of HDPE (safety/UV protection, versatility, endurance, value), and getting the governing bodies on board with the systems was challenging. Because HDPE with cable-tension systems was an emerging technology, we were oftentimes introducing this brand-new product to plan reviewers that were completely unfamiliar with it. Fortunately, it's now familiar to all municipalities.

What projects have been most rewarding?

From an accomplishment standpoint, the Las Vegas Raiders new Allegiant stadium site was probably one of our most satisfying projects. Because there were time constraints and we were having to work in conjunction with so many other trades and contractors, it was thrilling to get all of the structures designed, fabricated, and installed to meet their timeline needs. Those large projects are intriguing but from a rewarding standpoint, putting up a structure for a special need's playground or for the Make-a-Wish foundation, to provide comfort for those that have serious issues with the sun and heat, there are no more rewarding installations than those.
