Why are traditional freestanding shade structures better than integrated designs?

Integrated shade systems are typically added on by playground manufacturers. These are usually small and only provide limited coverage, mainly when the sun is directly overhead. They offer minimal protection throughout the day, especially in warmer climates. In contrast, traditional freestanding shade structures can span larger areas, offer broader UV protection and significantly reduce surface temperatures. This reduces the risk of burns and sun exposure for both children and adults. They also help protect expensive playground equipment and surfacing, extending the life and value of your investment.

How do shade structures hold up in strong winds?

HDPE fabric structures are among the most durable sun protection systems available. Engineered to withstand winds up to 150 mph, they use tensioned cables, reinforced steel frames, and deep footings for maximum security. The fabric's unique burst strength and elasticity allow it to perform in extreme weather while maintaining its integrity over time. This engineering also allows for larger clear spans, maximizing open space below, ideal for play areas, seating zones, or open-air walkways.

How do shade structures improve play-area comfort and safety?

Shade structures dramatically lower ground and equipment surface temperatures by blocking direct sunlight. This helps prevent burns on hot metal and plastic surfaces and reduces the risk of heat stress for kids and adults. Cooler play areas are not only safer but also more inviting, encouraging longer and more
enjoyable outdoor activity.

What should you look for in a shade structure warranty?

Strong warranties are a sign of high-quality materials and confident manufacturing. Look for warranties that cover both the fabric and steel components separately, typically 10 to 20 years. Non-prorated warranties offer the best protection; they don't lose value over time and reflect the manufacturer's commitment to durability and long-term performance.

Are shade structures only for sunny climates?

Not at all. Some of the highest rates of skin cancer occur in cooler, northern states like Utah, Vermont, and Minnesota, where people often overlook UV risks due to mild weather. UV rays can be just as harmful on cloudy days and can reflect off light colored surfaces like snow or concrete. Regardless of the region, shade structures provide essential year-round protection and are becoming increasingly valued in a wide range of climates.

As seen in LASN magazine, July 2025.
