The concrete sidewalk near the San Fernando, Calif. city court house was lifted up by tree roots.

Richard Valeriano, a public works inspector for Santa Monica, Calif., had a dream one night about sidewalks twisting and turning. It was not a dream about the feared next big L.A. area earthquake, just kind of a flexible, undulating sidewalk. That image suggested to Valeriano the idea of rubber sidewalks, which inspired Lindsay Smith to found Rubbersidewalks Inc. in 1991 in Gardena, Calif.

The new rubberized look of the sidewalk now. Installers usually place Rubbersidewalks pavers over a crushed granite base and connect the pavers using interlocking dowels. To repair a rubber sidewalk you simply unlock the dowels and remove the individual paver. Because of the shallowness of the installation, tree roots can be left alone up to 1.875?EUR??,,????'?????<

The Christian Science Monitor reports there are some 130,000 square feet of rubberized sidewalks in about 60 North American cities.

The premolded rubber squares (2' x 2' x 1.5") are cut to fit the job.

Each square foot of rubberized sidewalk contains almost one tire. The price of the rubber square is a bit more than two times the cost of concrete. However, one District of Columbia rubber sidewalk installation is credited with saving 35 aging trees. The installation was so shallow that the rubber surfacing was placed over the roots without needing to trim the roots, a procedure that would have been required with the deeper installation of concrete surfacing.
