Washington Street Mall, City of Cape May, N.J.
RVE prepared a conceptual design plan for the three-block pedestrian mall located at the end of Washington Street. This concept plan was based on meetings with project stakeholders and required attention of the needs of merchants, tourists and residents. Careful consideration of the community's historic character was included in the design. The firm developed full construction documents and provided construction management services. The space needed to provide additional seating and spaces for outdoor dining without hindering the enormous flow of pedestrian traffic. High quality materials were selected, including granite curbs, brick sidewalks, bluestone cobble, ornamental pedestrian lighting, and two water features. Once the concept plan was approved, construction began.

Rotary Park, City of Cape May, N.J.
Rotary Park serves as a hub for many of the city's cultural, artistic, historical and recreational activities. The park design needed to provide access to the disabled and elderly, as well as families with infants and toddlers. The design was developed to incorporate a wide array of sustainable materials, such as bluestone and brick pavers, as well as a 42-inch high wrought iron fencing in addition to a new three-tier water fountain placed in the center of the park. A bandstand, a 35-foot handcrafted memorial wooden flagpole and racks for up to 60 bicycles were also included in the project. By enlarging the gazebo, larger bands were able to perform while the improved lawn/seating area allowed for more spectators. Cast iron Victorian gaslights provided cohesiveness for the lighting systems throughout the community. Native species were utilized for groundcover, shrubs and trees to enhance a sense of place. More than 1,100 shrubs and flowers along with 22 trees were planted in the park. Sod was selected to provide a green environment and safe play area for children. Lawn areas were improved with the removal of hazardous tree roots to prevent tripping. Lastly, the final design layout addressed safety, public health, sound levels, nuisance, barrier-free and universal access.

Collins Lane Park, Maple Shade, N.J.
RVE was retained to provide design services to create a Master Plan and construction documents for the Collins Lane Park located in Maple Shade Township. A three-phased plan was developed to construct the park. This 5.43-acre parcel located along Collins Lane was a vacant open space with a historic silo and farmhouse to be restored by the historic society. Due to the surrounding residential uses abutting this site on three sides, the Township requested this vacant parcel be developed as a neighborhood park for passive recreation and open space with a walking trail for the surrounding and local residents. The park master plan incorporated passive recreation elements, such as a quarter mile asphalt walking trail, shaded picnic area, benches, gazebo, open lawn areas for passive recreation, and extensive landscaped areas to enhance park aesthetics and desired views. The park is designed to create various experiences as users move through the park from open and expansive lawn areas to a native wildflower meadow, shaded picnic areas, trails and natural wooded areas.

Lighthouse District Park, Atlantic City, N.J.
RVE was retained to provide engineering, planning and landscape architectural services for the design concept of the Lighthouse District Park. RVE also provided full design development, construction phase and project closeout services. The park was designed to be aesthetically pleasing for both pedestrians at the ground level and those above looking down onto the park from the lighthouse. Path systems, materials, park features and the layout were designed to create a space to be enjoyed by tourists visiting the lighthouse and residents using the adjacent Howard Altman Park. The combination of pathways and plantings were used to create geometric patterns and interest from above. Public safety was another major factor in the design. The park was designed in a manner to ensure the community, tourists and users feel comfortable within the site. This project was coordinated with the CRDA, project stakeholders, the community and local law enforcement.
