A Conversation with Kent Callison, Inclusive Play Champion with GameTime by Kent Callison, Inclusive Play Champion with GameTime
The best playgrounds aren't just filled with laughter from children at play-they are filled with stories from generations. Outdoor spaces, when designed with intention, can bridge age gaps, create lasting memories, and promote health and connection between people of all ages. While people of divergent generations may prefer different outdoor activities, intergenerational play creates opportunities for family members to engage, bond, and learn from each other in meaningful ways. As landscape architects look for ways to engage multiple generations in a single space, we offer ways to design intergenerational activity into the marvelous places they create. What Is Intergenerational Play? Researchers say intergenerational play is "an active exchange or connection between and among the generations." This type of play allows for shared experiences that promote understanding, empathy, and stronger family connections. Whether it's a grandparent enjoying a game with their grandchild or siblings of varying ages exploring a playground together, intergenerational play brings people closer in an active and intentional way.
