The locations listed below are open to the public and accessible by car, foot or public transportation. If you can?EUR??,,????'???t make the scheduled outing you can plan your own visit. The Golden Spike National Historic Site marks the completion of the world?EUR??,,????'???s first transcontinental railroad. Tour the visitor center and the Golden Spike Engine House where restored locomotives are housed for maintenance and repair. During a one-and-a-half mile walking tour you will see some of rail?EUR??,,????'???s most difficult achievements firsthand, including the Central Pacific?EUR??,,????'???s Big Fill and the site of the Union Pacific?EUR??,,????'???s Big Trestle. Next, you?EUR??,,????'???ll visit the Browning Museum to learn about firearms invented by John M. Browning?EUR??,,????'??+including the Colt .45 and the Winchester.

Utah’s leaders commanded the pioneers to ?EUR??,,????'??Make the desert bloom like a rose.?EUR??,,????'?? In response, downtown Salt Lake City has developed world-renowned parks and gardens and acknowledged reliance on the creek that sustains the bloom. This walking tour includes a series of gardens following the path of City Creek, the backbone of the original settlement of the valley. Visit many historic sites along the way, such as Brigham Young?EUR??,,????'???s home, Temple Square, Memory Grove, the LDS Church Conference Center landscape and rooftop garden with an urban meadow, and a quaint historic neighborhood where the city was first settled. Several of the sites are contemporary designs that transformed parking lots and city streets into vibrant parks with a strong sense of the past.

Utah’s Jordan River winds through the state’s most populous area on its journey to the Great Salt Lake. It plays a role in the valley’s hydrology, geology, and history, provides irrigation, and is an important part of an international bird migration corridor. In the 157 years since the founding of Salt Lake’s, it has also suffered the abuses of neglectful urban living. When habitat and water quality diminished to an untenable state and people stopped fishing and swimming in the river, a call to action was sounded. In the last decade, residents began to rediscover the river and have worked to restore its potential as an urban oasis. This tour will introduce the context and history of the Jordan River, we’ll visit some of the sites that are now enjoyed by thousands, and meet some of the people working to save this ?EUR??,,????'??Last Chance Landscape.?EUR??,,????'??

Explore the fusion of a 19th century mining town with the 21st century development for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Visit the Olympic legacy sites that keep the Salt Lake City area in the forefront of winter sports training and outdoor recreation. Tour Utah Olympic Park, home of the Olympic luge, skeleton, and bobsled tracks, and the world?EUR??,,????'???s highest altitude ski jumps. Other stops include: Deer Valley Resort, site of three Olympic events; Park City Mountain Resort, site of two Olympic events; the Utah Olympic Oval, home of the ?EUR??,,????'??world?EUR??,,????'???s fastest ice;?EUR??,,????'?? and Olympic Cauldron Park, site of the opening and closing ceremonies.

Visit one of the largest open pit copper mines in the world, learn about its looming retirement and reclamation plans, and tour the first phase of Daybreak, part of Kennecott Land’s 90,000-acre new community planning effort. Daybreak is based on sustainable principles and built on land formerly part of the Kennecott Copper mining operation. Speakers representing Kennecott Land, Calthorpe Associates, and Design Workshop will describe the challenges and opportunities associated with the transition of land uses and new community planning.

Utah is the second driest state in the nation, yet reliable mountain snows historically have allowed citizens to develop lush landscapes. Recent drought conditions have encouraged people to adopt water conservation and xeriscape gardening is finding its local expression. Visit the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, which recently developed demonstration gardens and landscapes illustrating water-efficient practices that can be used as alternatives to a predominantly bluegrass landscapes. The tour will visit several private landscapes as well.

This tour includes site visits and discussion of three local university campuses: Brigham Young University; the University of Utah; and Utah State University. The Brigham Young University grounds manager will present the university?EUR??,,????'???s effective use of maintenance time-motion studies and campus recycling programs that are having an impact on campus landscapes. The BYU Campus Landscape Architect will guide participants to selected spaces of the university. Utah State University will present their published 2002 Campus Master Plan, which was developed as a growth management plan. Finally, visit the University of Utah for a site visit and discussion of the university?EUR??,,????'???s restored historic buildings and their integration with the newly developed Heritage Commons.

This tour takes you along the Shoreline Trail, following old topographic benches left by predecessors to the Great Salt Lake. Heavily used for recreation in Salt Lake County, it bridges highways to connect canyons, residential areas, the University of Utah, parks, and multiple cultural sites. Visit This Is the Place Heritage Park, site of historical monuments, and Old Deseret Village, a reconstruction of pioneer homes and businesses. Other stops on the tour include Hogle Zoo, Red Butte Garden and Arboretum, Fort Douglas, the University of Utah Research Park, City Creek Canyon, the Utah State Capitol building, and Ensign Peak parks.

Visit two art studios and two foundries for a collaborative analysis of one of America?EUR??,,????'???s largest bronze monuments, which is being sculpted and cast near Salt Lake City. This is a unique opportunity to see a world-class work of art in all stages, from conceptual models to finished components. Tour Historical Arts and Casting, which is sand-casting the wagons for the project, for an overview of the sand-casting process. Other stops include the studios of Ed Fraughton, Blair Buswell, and Adonis Bronze, specializing in lost wax foundry work. This project is being filmed for a television documentary and the tour will include an eight-minute clip of the film.

Explore downtown Salt Lake City’s heritage of urban parks and open space. Visit an example of brownfield, or contaminated site, development, learn about plans for the interface of urban mass transit, light rail, and commuter rail, and hear about the redevelopment taking place in Salt Lake City’s Gateway District. This area is transitioning from a rail-oriented industrial district to a mixed-use retail, residential, and transit hub for the city. The tour will wrap-up with a look at redevelopment projects in the city’s historic central business district, including Gallivan Plaza, City Library Square, and the Richardsonian City and County Building at Washington Square.

Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah, was conceived as a gesture of thanksgiving for the wonders and beauties of nature. The 280-plus acre site began as a garden and small farm and has grown to include housing sites, recreation areas, a nursery, greenhouses, a tree farm, a petting zoo, display gardens, a boutique, a dinosaur museum, a movie theater, and a farmers?EUR??,,????'??? market. Future plans include extended-stay housing, condominiums, and retail opportunities. The jewel of the development is an 80-acre ornamental garden featuring waterfalls, an amphitheater, a children?EUR??,,????'???s garden, and numerous garden displays. An 18-hole, Johnny Miller signature golf course has also been added to enhance the open space and provide a recreation outlet.

The Wasatch Mountains are a natural retreat for the 1.6 million residents of the urbanized Wasatch Front. The National Forest that covers this region is the most heavily visited in the country. In addition to many places to hike, bike, camp, and ski, the mountains have many seasonal homes and major tourist attractions, as well as mining and forestry activities. This tour will loop across a section of the mountains that showcase some of the scenic and recreational wonders and will highlight the challenges of accommodating many different people and uses in a sensitive environment.

Take a tour of Utah?EUR??,,????'???s Inland Sea to witness the lake?EUR??,,????'???s importance in the state?EUR??,,????'???s development and to understand the challenges to its survival. The tour will include: stops at Antelope Island, a 28,000-acre island with a resident bison herd and an award-winning visitor center; the Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve, a 3,500-acre Nature Conservancy wetland; the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area, a state-owned complex of diked pools managed for waterfowl production, recreation, and hunting; and Utah House at the Utah Botanical Center, a residence and landscape built to demonstrate sustainable use.

Explore the role of transit in urban planning, transit-oriented development, and transportation enhancements as you visit notable stops along the UTA Light Rail route. Get three different perspectives on ways to enhance transit and make it a part of the community. Board the train at Delta Center, where you will hear about Art on Trax, a new approach to transportation enhancement. Next, visit 3300 South Station, where Envision Utah will present theTransit-Oriented Development Toolkit. The last stop will take you to 10000 South for a discussion of community planning developed around transit at 9400 South.
