Aziz Aslami knows that the United States?EUR??,,????'??? bombing missions in Afghanistan were necessary in the country?EUR??,,????'???s war against terrorism and efforts to prevent Osama Bin Laden?EUR??,,????'???s Al-Queda network from planning more terror attacks around the world. Nonetheless, the bombing missions left Aslami, who was born and raised in Afghanistan, with a heavy heart. When the opportunity arose for engineers, architects and planners from around the world to help Afghanistan rebuild, Aslami knew he needed to get involved. ?EUR??,,????'??Planners plan for a reason,?EUR??,,????'?? he said. ?EUR??,,????'??And that reason is human being.?EUR??,,????'?? Aslami decided to leave his career in the Development Services Department at the City of Lake Forest, California, to volunteer his talents to rebuilding Afghanistan. In January 2002, Aslami left for Mazar and Kohlm in northern Afghanistan as part of an effort by Samaritan?EUR??,,????'???s Purse to rebuild the cities and spirits of the Afghani people. ?EUR??,,????'??I was happy to go back as an American, as a planner and as a human being,?EUR??,,????'?? Aslami said. ?EUR??,,????'??The people of Afghanistan are feeling a two-sided pain. There is the human tragedy and a total violation of law and order (in relation to planning).?EUR??,,????'?? Aslami noted that more than 230 building professionals representing 26 countries volunteered to help Afghanistan rebuild from the rubble caused by war. Aslami said the first job was to create policies to help rebuild the city of Kabul. These policies included determining the priorities of the rebuild and the cost effectiveness of the project. Later, the building professionals drafted general plans for the rebuilding of the entire country. Aslami?EUR??,,????'???s abilities as a planner were called into action as he worked to draft agreements for local governments, negotiate contracts and sale prices, hire and oversee local labor, and resolve conflicts. He planned and oversaw the construction of a boys high school, a girls high school, a middle school, and a 25-bed hospital/clinic in Kholm and two high schools in Aybak. He has participated in the construction of 600 housing units and 110 deep-water wells funded by the United Nations and manages the operation of an orphan care center in Mazar.
