The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Panorama Park is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Panorama Park, located in southeast Colorado Springs, is a transformative community-centered revitalization that has redefined neighborhood recreation and inclusivity. Previously an underutilized 13.5-acre site with only a small playground and minimal amenities, the park underwent what the City of Colorado Springs called the largest neighborhood park renovation in its history, opening to the public in August 2022 after a 16-month construction effort.

 

Guided by extensive community engagement, the project delivered a dynamic mix of amenities tailored to diverse users of all ages and abilities. Key features now include a universally accessible playground, interactive splash pad, event lawn and shaded plaza for performances, a multi-use sports field, youth skate and bike areas, climbing boulder, fitness stations, and community-designed art murals made from more than 7,000 tiles.

Innovative design strategies went beyond recreation to integrate multi-benefit green infrastructure: stormwater management is woven into trails and the bike challenge course, enhancing water quality and reducing runoff while contributing functional landscape features.

The project's community-driven approach and excellence in design and construction have been widely recognized. Panorama Park earned a Gold Award of Excellence through the National Association of Landscape Professionals, a Merit Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects Colorado Chapter, the Columbine Award from the Colorado Parks and Recreation Association, and the Colorado Lottery Starburst Award.
