Painted Sky Park

Apache Junction, Arizona
by Landscape Structures & SWABACK Architects + Planners

Painted Sky Park stands as a prime example of successful public-private partnership and a significant new asset for the City of Apache Junction. As the City's newest and largest public park, this 16-acre destination within the Blossom Rock community has quickly become a vibrant hub for residents across Apache Junction.

The Playgrounds Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. Painted Sky Park is one of several great projects we are excited to showcase on LandscapeArchitect.com.

Painted Sky Park in Apache Junction, Arizona, offers a sprawling playground with a custom climbing wall and Forma® contemporary play structures. For children aged 5 to 12, the topography of the park creates fun obstacles like the curved climbing wall lining the edge of a hillside. Multiple Forma freestanding play components give the park a contemporary feel, with two swing sets, the multifaceted Fortress® Multi-Climber, the Folio® Balance Climber and Footprint® Wobble Bouncers. Along with the Forma components, a Crab Trap® provides an unscripted cable-net web of climbing fun and hidden play features. For preschoolers ages 2 to 5, a PlayShaper® structure offers age-appropriate challenges like climbing, sliding and sensory learning panels.

SWABACK played a pivotal role within the larger Blossom Rock development, contributing to both the vision and realization of this exceptional public space. Painted Sky Park features a 1.5-acre lake with catch-and-release fishing, extensive walking paths, shaded ramadas, and expansive open lawns perfect for community gatherings. The park showcases "Miner's Run," a dynamic 3.5-acre adventure playground offering engaging and challenging play opportunities for children, alongside the dedicated "Ruff Ranch" dog park with separate areas for different sized dogs, plus various game courts.

Since its opening and well-attended grand celebration, Painted Sky Park has been enthusiastically embraced by the community. It is widely recognized as a valuable asset that significantly enhances quality of life, provides essential recreational opportunities for all ages, and exemplifies successful collaboration between the city and developer in creating shared public amenities within growing communities. This project demonstrates our team's capability to deliver high-quality, impactful public spaces that become cherished community resources.
