The 1,300 curving acres of the master planned community of Druid Hills, DeKalb County, Atlanta, Ga. was the work of Frederick Law Olmsted. Beginning in 1890 he laid out the neighborhood around a chain of linear parks along Ponce de Leon Avenue and designated a tourist hotel and two lakes. Olmsted’s plan was not realized until his passing. Charles Olmsted, Frederick?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s stepson, eliminated the hotel and lakes and added an electric street railway line adjacent to Ponce de Leon Avenue. By 1900, many of Atlanta’s well-heeled citizens chose to live here. The community is on the National Register of Historic Places and you have seen it if you ever watched the Academy Award-winning film ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Driving Miss Daisy.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Since 1997, the alliance has created walking and jogging paths and planted 2,600 trees and shrubs. Utility lines are now buried and decorative street lamps installed. The alliance has completed most of the work on Springdale, Virgilee, Oak Grove, Shadyside and Dellwood parks. The rehab of Deepdene Park, a wooded 22 acres and the largest of the parks, is ongoing work to create access to the woods through a network of walking trails and restoration of Peavine Creek. Park improvements have followed as much as possible Olmsted?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s designs and practices. Spencer Tunnell, an Atlanta-based landscape architect is coordinating the work. The Deepdene improvements are expected for completion by late 2008. For more information on the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance visit atlantaolmstedpark.org
